Bulky Gray Capelet

Bulky thick and thin wool yarn; size 10.5 metal cable needle; stockinette stitch

I love making capelets and have made many, this being the most recent example. I still use the formula set out in a book called The Knitting Experience by Sally Melville.  I think she called it a circle scarf.  I is a versatile formula and I intentionally call it a formula rather than a pattern.

When I use it I work out a gauge with the yarn then cast on the bottom, knit for seven inches and then decrease.  I knit four more inches then decrease again, which will be right about at the shoulders.  I knit four more inches and then create whatever kind of neckline I'd like the capelet to have.  I like this length, which generally falls right around the elbows, because it provides warmth and yet it doesn't get in the way like a full length cape or poncho might.

Shiny!

Scarf, rayon, polyester, linen, cotton, seed stitch, size 8 cable needle, 24 in.

I've had both of these novelty yarns for awhile and have wanted to put them to good use, so I waited until I felt like I had the right idea.  The railroad yarn with the pastel "ties" seemed to have too much color by itself, so I hit upon adding a black yarn, but I did not want something fuzzy - I wanted to keep the shiny aspect as the stronger texture.  The linen flags yarn from Japan seemed like the right idea.  Yes!

I think the attitude for this scarf is more like a pettit but strong accent, so the scarf is smaller than I commonly make, but still easy to tie or pin together to cover the shoulders or work as a headscarf.

The black background is formed from shiny polyester with some white strands that make it glint, and the cotton and linen yarn form a matt black depth so that the pastel bits pop out.

It's not quite transparent, but lacy enough so that anything under it will show through. This makes it a good summer scarf and a good party scarf.

This scarf is for sale along with about a dozen others in my etsy shop, Little Hands Studio:

Soft and fuzzy

Shawlette, mixed fibers: wool, cotton, angora, silk, linen, rayon, nylon,  mohair; woven stitch (linen stitch); size 7 cable needle, 24 in.

I like "capelet" better than shawlette, but I thought I'd try out the new word.  I cast on 200 stitches and have made the lovely mild teal angora/cotton blend by  Elsbeth Lavold the main yarn, with about 7 other yarns in lengths around 4 to 8 feet.  I like the linen stitch effect because it blends the colors in a nice way.
