Little Hands Studio News - November 15, 2022

 This is the group of work I'm using to see if the Shelburne Arts Cooperative will accept my work for their lovely gallery in Shelburne Falls, MA. They ask for an email with photos of five works with descriptions and retail prices, a bio and statement of what level of membeship I'd like.

I'm not submitting any works involving paper at this time, although I am thinking about switching to more paper things or household items.  

Or should I do that for another gallery? I'm also looking at the charming gallery in the town next door as a possibility. I should probably concentrate on SAC first.

I've been preparing for a popup show and sale in my studio for the past month and things were busy in the knitting chair. Now I'm looking at different stitching possibilities, perhaps more like needle and thread. I saw some small fabric bowls that sent my mind spinning out into about a hundred design ideas. Then there are handbags and fabric jewelry that have piqued my interest all year.

Old Prism bubble: completion at last!

Triangle Shawl, size 6 cable needle, 32 in. mixed fibers, rib stitch.

This is how it developed over the final days:

And done!  It is about 75 in across the top and about 24 in at the longest point.

I had to sqeeze it  together to fit it on the table so I decided to stretch it out to its full glory  for display on the triangle loom.

There's a long list of lovely yarns in this work.  I indicate each yarn with a letter.  I change yarns each row. Then I list out the pattern of rows.  So with colors A B C D E F G the pattern row order might go something like:

Cray cray but nice.

Mixed fibers blanket

Begun in 2019

approximately 60 x 80 inches when completed; mixed fibers

The combination of black, brown and gray give this blanket a look that is like mink fur, thus the name. A wool chenille-like yarn in black and brown forms the most bulky stripes.  Various bulky textures add  interest and add dynamic color changes. It could be used anyplace you might otherwise use a fur throw.

It's Pink!

This extra-fun capelet was knitting on a 10.75 cable needle 37 inches long.  It is all rib stitch.

It is composed of eight yarns in a variety of pink, and light purple colors with a little orange mixed in for good measure.

It includes silk, wool, linen, nylon, rayon and mohair.

I knitted it over a period of about four weeks this summer.

Insight Meditation Society Staff quilt

Gotta love a group quilt! Our quilt organizer, Rebecca Layton, began to develop this quilt in the spring of 2020, just as the COVID19 outbreak became obvious around the world.  Our organization hosts meditation retreats, so at that time we had to cease operations and the retreat center was in temporary suspension.  So Rebecca requested that we create a community art project.  She asked people to do a 12in. x 12 in. block and we had 24 blocks when all was said and done.

Most of the blocks were created from fabrics designed by Rebecca.  She has a business called Rekh and Datta that is a brand of clothing.  She works with artisans in India to produce wonderful block printed textiles. 

A team of three pulled together the blocks and created sashing to help make an integrated quilt top design.

Some blocks were more abstract and some blocks documented the pandemic and other happenings in the moment.  2020 was a year full of social and political upheaval, so there was a lot to think about!

Once the blocks were completed and assembled we held a few quilting bees.

Many of those who contributed to the quilt had never sewn before, so it was an opportunity to participate in a  community project in brand new way

Fabric necklace - linen and velvet

18 in.; necklace, linen pendant with velvet ropes and button closure.  Glass beads on the pendant and a glass pendant at the bottom.

A sketch really helped in planning this one.

The glass pendant helps create some movement - the necklace would be rather stiff otherwise.
