Filet crochet scarf

Filet crochet scarf with a double crochet border; one circle embellishment,;72 in long x 8 in wide; size 2mm hook; the yarn is one strand/ply of linen with one strand/ply of kid mohair.

The crochet involed here forms a grid by spacing double crochet stictches along the row and in each row stictch the double crochet only into the double crochet from the previous row.  It builds a very open lacy fabic quickly. The linen in this fabric gives it body and weight.

Requested by a friend, who already had the yarn.  I had to give it three tries to make the yarn amount work with the design I had in mind, so I'm glad filet crochet is extremely flexible!!  It looks much more sparkly and gaudy in person.

It's been awhile since I've made handbags, and I feel a bout coming on.  I want  to make them for spring and summer.

In the studio - black filet crochet

Scarf, filet crochet with added tufts, mixed fibers and aluminum, size H crochet hook.

This scarf is going very quickly and will be light for early fall.  I'm tying the tufts in randomly and they have shiny spots that will provide coppery flecks of brightness.  It will go in the washer and dryer to be fulled, which I think will bring out a wonderful fuzziness and sort of obscure the individul stitch shapes and make the tufts more fluffy.

The filet crochet progress - the shell border is taking shape nicely and the colors are superb.  I'm always fond of Noro colors and this yarn is no exception.

The one difficulty is that that yarn knots and knots and knots when pulled from the center of the ball.

I started this weeks ago but my interest in it has returned now that the baby blanket has been completed.  My plan is to make it rather long and add substance by making a dense ruffle for the border.  I have another ball of the yarn, so I'm sure there'll be enough to make the ruffle, which won't be wide, but will be sort of heavy.

Ok, so I had so much fun resting that I took the whole month of June. It was wonderful. But I didn't do a lot of knitting or chrocheting. I began this piece for my new apartment. I'm thinking that it will be a very good match for an 1871 style apartment, and I'll be using the curtains in the front windows.

I love the yarns in this capelet, however they are challenging when it comes to hiding the knots in this skimpy fabric. So I'm trying to wrap the knot ends in metallic threads. It's a subtle shimmer effect and makes the whole work much more neat.

This is a sister piece to the black and silver one I did last fall. I have more of this tape and I'm intrigued by it. I want to make things with quite a bit of drape because the metallic fiber in the yarn makes it very stiff otherwise.

This is one of the dozen or so things I've started.

Capelet, nylon and metallic tape, red and gold, filet crochet, size p aluminum hook.

The guage must be very large for this tape to drape properly, but the results are quite wonderful. It's purely decorative as a garment, and I like that. I visualize it working not merely over plain colors, but I think it could spice up prints as well.


I chained about 150 stitches, then joined the chain to form a circle. Now I will filet crochet for about 7 inches, decrease for a shoulder curve, then decrease again to form the neckline. I will add a shell or piquot border to the bottom.

Oh yeah -- I've ended up really loving this piece. I can't count how many patterns and ideas I had to try before I found something that I liked with this ribbon. It was in the $3.00 bin at my local yarn shop, so I got bunches. It was a difficult challenge! It's over 1cm wide. I feel that it's quite heavy when knitted up, so I like an airy pattern to keep the weight from getting to be too much. I tried large shell patterns with the N needle, then finally settled on the filet. The shells were too bulky, and looked very cool until the thing was on a real body, then it was not so good. I think it works beautifully in the filet and has the drape I was seeking.
